this is where the stuff i make goes

nearly everything made on inkscape, some assets or photos might not be mine. most posts here will be maps and map-related stuff, but that could change

scenario lore and notes

this map was quite fun. it's set in a world where Britain is essentially the hegemon of the Americas and East Asia, with Columbia being one of their smaller dependencies. therefore, it's seen as somewhat of a backwater, with the exception of the main commerce center in the "twin ports" (irl Seattle and Vancouver) and their little sidekick, Victoria. this has understandably lead to regional patriotism, with a completely different partisan dynamic as compared to the rest of the dominion. another thing to note is the importance of the religious dynamic in politics as compared to irl, with one of the major divides beyond simple left-right politics being that of the church of england-aligned Commonwealth and United West parties and "generic christian" Social Credit versus the largely secular opposition parties. hope this makes some sense.

01/14* – The Functionary, parts 1 & 2

part 1

this is a two-part series following the rise and fall of Governor Gray Davis if he were competent enough to avoid the 2003 recall. while he leaves office in 2006, to a Democratic Party searching for a viable path forward after their ignominious defeat in 2004, he is the logical choice. i like the way the news article boxes turned out.

part 2

here's where the bottom falls out for our protagonist. he wins the Presidency quite comfortably, but soon proves just as incapable of controlling Congress as he was with his state legislature. bailouts don't get passed, healthcare reform is watered down to a token effort, and things generally continue sucking, which leads to 2010 being even worse for his party than it was irl. against this backdrop, Davis loses the Iowa presidential caucus and fails to attain sufficient delegates to be renominated, leading to a contested convention. in the end, Duval Patrick is nominated as a compromise candidate, and he goes on to lose by a significant margin.

scenario lore and notes

this is prob one of my most in-depth one-off maps. basically the premise is that the French Directory government is exiled to Haïti, where they establish an uneasy alliance with L'Overture and the local powers. this leads to war etc., the new state in hispanola repels colonial influence and builds a republic... which promptly gets overthrown. and then again. and then again. and then aga
basically it's still a dictatorship in all but name, as the 1947 election pictured is semi-free and not entirely fair. but hey, it's economically pretty prosperous, and racial issues are mostly dealt with. overall the main focus here was on the color palette, which i think i executed fairly well.
