The Shape of Tomorrow
A new mod for the Campaign Trail.
I. HISTORY
In 1973, America was shaken to its very core. Richard Nixon, elected with the hearts of forty-one million men and women, resigned in disgrace, and his newly appointed vice president was left to clean up the mess.
In the Democratic Party, the forces of liberalism, so recently vanquished, found their footing in Arizona Senator Morris Udall, while the incumbent Ford narrowly beat back his right flank with promises for a conservative turn. In the end, however, the American people were too enthralled by economic recovery to care about anything else. By a margin of 300 to 235 with three defections, Gerald Ford would be president in his own right.
As 1980 rolled around, the mirage of a boom slipped into economic stagnation. President Ford had to pay the piper with an endorsement of Ronald Reagan – an endorsement he would come to regret as the "second coming of Goldwater" shot himself in the foot by alienating the establishment and even portions of his theoretical base. In contrast, Democrats finally found their footing with a "dream team" of moderate Southerner Fritz Hollings and progressive Northeasterner Liz Holtzman, who welcomed disaffected New Englanders with open arms and cajoled the South back in line with pork and promises. In the end, only the West stayed with the tired crusader as the Old South returned in full force.
The year is 1984. The state of the Union is strong, and the Republican Party is divided. It longs for a champion, and you think you might have just the man it needs.
